promising that he would \u201creconsider\u201d the measures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As government teams go back over plans for this new legislation, we thought we\u2019d share a few quick reminders (highlighted in <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/11UE0VGKBsT_Oo-G5e7LMTkWxJQFSryG2\/view?usp=sharing\">this brilliant letter<\/a> by the team at Feedback) on why food waste reporting&nbsp; really is a no-brainer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It\u2019s popular with the public&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">99% of the 3,852 respondents to the government\u2019s Consultation supported mandatory food waste reporting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over 16,500 people have signed this <a href=\"https:\/\/action.feedbackglobal.org\/page\/135122\/action\/1?locale=en-GB\">Make Food Waste Count petition<\/a> urging the government to make it a legal requirement for all large and medium sized businesses to measure and report their food waste by 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>If you haven\u2019t signed Feedback\u2019s petition yet &#8211; what are you waiting for?!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The majority of businesses are in favour, too -including Tesco, Waitrose and Ocado<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>79% of retailers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>73% of the hospitality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>67% of primary producers&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who responded to the consultation backed the introduction of mandatory food waste reporting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/feedbackglobal.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Statement-on-UK-wide-mandatory-food-waste-reporting.pdf\">this joint statement<\/a> (signed by yours truly!) as well as organisations like FareShare, The Sustainable Restaurant Association, the Nature Friendly Farming Network, Sodexo and CH&amp;CO and more*, which calls for mandatory food waste reporting for all large and medium-sized businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>*Sustain, Wildlife and Countryside Link, the Green Alliance, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, and the Soil Association<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1142\" src=\"https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/02\/image.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/02\/image.jpeg 1600w, https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/02\/image-300x214.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/02\/image-1024x731.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/02\/image-768x548.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/02\/image-1536x1096.jpeg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tesco is one of a few big businesses calling on the government to make this change <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The experts are all agreed that it\u2019s a total no-brainer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>WRAP, Climate Change Committee and the House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee are all aligned that:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mandatory food waste reporting is essential if we want to achieve the UN\u2019s Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 to half global food waste by 2023<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;They also agree that the decision to introduce this is \u201clong overdue\u201d, and should be implemented immediately<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It\u2019s got support from MPs&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>29 MPs have signed Early Day Motion 1611 calling on the government to introduce food waste reporting across all sectors &#8211; including primary production, manufacturing, retail and hospitality and food service.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This EDM was signed by MPs from Labour, the Lib Dems, the SNP and Green Party.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1062\" src=\"https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/02\/image-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/02\/image-2.jpeg 1600w, https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/02\/image-2-300x199.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/02\/image-2-1024x680.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/02\/image-2-768x510.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/02\/image-2-1536x1020.jpeg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">29 MPs have signed Early Day Motion 1611 in support of introducing mandatory food waste reporting<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>There\u2019s massive cost saving potential for businesses and consumers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Food waste currently costs UK businesses and citizens an estimated \u00a319 billion per year.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The government\u2019s impact assessment found that food waste measurement at a business level would only cost \u00a319.18\/tonne of food waste targeted \u2013that\u2019s pretty&nbsp; good value!&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It also found that businesses would see savings of \u00a31,200 to \u00a33,100 per tonne of food waste.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;Feedback have calculated that if mandatory food waste reporting in England led to just a 1% reduction in food waste, this would result in net savings to food businesses of an estimated \u00a324.4 million per year.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">As from the time we&#8217;re writing this blog, Defra have just launched a really important\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/forms.office.com\/pages\/responsepage.aspx?id%3DgdkPhdRHq0mXW9n-8KW0Uskqz8ZVVr9NgHFsNZRqNrBUQVU2ODBBNk9LVjZYWldVRDYzVkg1N1JMUi4u%26utm_source%3DCourtauld%2B2030%2B-%2BVoluntary%2BAgreement%2BMembers%26utm_campaign%3De88b32612f-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2023_02_21_08_23_COPY_01%26utm_medium%3Demail%26utm_term%3D0_-0fcec89733-%255bLIST_EMAIL_ID%255d&amp;source=gmail-imap&amp;ust=1708519523000000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2u7aWTTX2DrUOdjyO3Vdme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">survey\u00a0on mandatory food waste reporting<\/a>\u00a0via WRAP,\u00a0with a deadline\u00a0of 1st March. This is targeted at large businesses only, and will look at how the &#8220;potential financial costs or savings associated with measuring and reporting would impact consumers&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">We think that the results of this survey could be pivotal!
