This social media whistle-blower has spent the last few months on a mission to uncover food waste at his local supermarkets&nbsp; &#8211; and followers of the account have been equal parts fascinated and furious to see what he\u2019s found.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who\u2019s the Food Waste Inspector, and what\u2019s he discovered?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The social media detective has been visiting bin stores at nearby supermarkets, and filming his findings as he\u2019s exposed bins full of perfectly good food. He hasn\u2019t just discovered food &#8211; in many cases, he\u2019s found items like china mugs, jugs, flowers, and Christmas decorations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The backlash has been widespread &#8211; with many Instagram users expressing anger that while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2026\/jan\/27\/very-deep-poverty-uk-record-numbers-joseph-rowntree-foundation-analysis\">they\u2019re struggling to pay for food<\/a>, a handful of supermarkets are binning perfectly good food that still within its \u201cuse by\u201d or \u201cbest before\u201d date:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"3000\" height=\"3000\" src=\"https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Food-Waste-Revolution-Images-1-scaled.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Food-Waste-Revolution-Images-1-scaled.png 3000w, https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Food-Waste-Revolution-Images-1-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Food-Waste-Revolution-Images-1-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Food-Waste-Revolution-Images-1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Food-Waste-Revolution-Images-1-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Food-Waste-Revolution-Images-1-1536x1536.png 1536w, https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Food-Waste-Revolution-Images-1-2048x2048.png 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 3000px) 100vw, 3000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s more, media outlets have been keeping a close eye on the Instagram account &#8211; publishing updates and putting even more pressure on the supermarkets involved:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"684\" height=\"175\" src=\"https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-26-at-16.47.46.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-26-at-16.47.46.png 684w, https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-26-at-16.47.46-300x77.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 684px) 100vw, 684px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"697\" height=\"162\" src=\"https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-26-at-14.37.47.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-26-at-14.37.47.png 697w, https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-26-at-14.37.47-300x70.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 697px) 100vw, 697px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"656\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-27-at-10.28.25.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-27-at-10.28.25.png 656w, https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-27-at-10.28.25-300x69.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 656px) 100vw, 656px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>So wait &#8211; <em>why<\/em> is perfectly good food ending up in the bin?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First up, it\u2019s worth noting that a lot of retailers <em>are<\/em> doing a fantastic job at managing their food waste.&nbsp;At Olio, we really believe edible food should never be thrown away &#8211; especially when millions of people are going hungry, and food waste accounts for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfp.org\/stories\/5-facts-about-food-waste-and-hunger\">10% of our global greenhouse gas emissions<\/a>.&nbsp; It\u2019s never a nice sight to see food in the bin &#8211;&nbsp; but there are sometimes explainable reasons that food might end up in bins round the back of a retail store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It could be that there <em>are<\/em> processes in place that haven&#8217;t been followed by store staff. Equally, it could be down to damaged packaging, or a broken fridge unit that wasn&#8217;t caught in time. But while this could explain occasional food waste &#8211; it doesn\u2019t quite stack up when looking at the scale (and frequency) of wastage uncovered by @food_waste_inspector_.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many of the cases exposed by the account, retailers are actually already working with charities to redistribute unsold food. But if there are no charities available on a particular day, food can still end up in the bin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Layering community redistribution over charity redistribution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And this is where Olio comes in. As part of our <a href=\"https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/case-study\/food-waste-tesco\/\">partnerships with some of the UK\u2019s major retailers<\/a>, wherever possible&nbsp;Olio volunteers step in for charities to rescue food from stores where (or when) there are no charity volunteers available. For example, this could be at stores in more remote locations where there aren&#8217;t any charities nearby, when collections are late at night, or during weekends or holidays when charities are often closed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For any retailer struggling to donate all their surplus to charity, Olio is here to help make sure as little edible surplus goes to waste as possible, and instead feeds local families. <strong>You can read more about our surplus redistribution work <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.olioapp.com\/business\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; and our volunteers can rescue non-food, too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/FWH-Programme.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2096\" srcset=\"https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/FWH-Programme.png 1000w, https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/FWH-Programme-300x180.png 300w, https:\/\/olioapp.com\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/FWH-Programme-768x461.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What does this all mean, and what needs to change?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Olio we strongly believe there needs to be a serious shift in attitudes to food waste in the UK &#8211; starting with legislation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is already innovation happening around redistribution in the retail sector, but we think new laws would drastically accelerate this, making the adoption of more efficient food waste reduction practices more widespread.<br> <br>In the UK, the Government has explored <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1PFWVltOeJQtJTTmkG0gpY-TYHSUak7ZA\/view?usp=sharing\">introducing mandatory food waste reporting<\/a>\u00a0 for large and medium-sized food businesses. However, despite <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/64c2413ea4ba200010f1ef0b\/Summary_of_responses_and_government_response_food_waste_reporting_July_2023.pdf\">broad support<\/a> from industry groups, environmental organisations, MPs and many retailers, this hasn\u2019t yet been enforced (we\u2019re keeping our fingers crossed that might change!).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Internationally, there are examples of successful policy on food waste. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org\/circular-examples\/frances-anti-waste-and-circular-economy-law\">France\u2019s Anti-Waste and Circular Economy Law<\/a> (Loi anti-gaspillage pour une \u00e9conomie circulaire), adopted in 2020, is one of the most ambitious frameworks globally. It includes a ban on the \u201c<em>destruction of unsold edible food by retailers<\/em>\u201d, backed by significant financial penalties, and requires large food businesses to establish formal partnerships for food donation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to mandatory food waste reporting, we would <em>love<\/em> for the UK to start recognising commercial redistributors like Olio alongside traditional non-profit charities in any food redistribution obligations. <br><br>This is important because, while the work that charities do is invaluable, they often can\u2019t rescue very short-dated surplus food at scale, limiting the amount of food that can be diverted from waste streams. Hyper-local redistribution models like Olio\u2019s can.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Looking ahead to a future free of food waste<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The good news? Olio volunteers already collect unsold surplus from&nbsp; 6 out of the top 10 retailers in the UK, and from more abroad, so <em>all<\/em> edible surplus can reach bellies &#8211; not bins.
