So what is e-waste<\/strong>, and why is it such a problem?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

E-waste refers to discarded electronic devices such as mobile phones, computers, televisions and other electronics with a plug or battery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Global E-waste Monitor 2024<\/a><\/strong>, the world generated 62 million tonnes of e-waste in 2022<\/strong>, a record high and an increase of 82% since 2010. At current rates, global e-waste is projected to reach 82 million tonnes by 2030<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite this growing volume, only 22.3% of e-waste is formally collected and recycled<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When electronics are thrown away or sent to landfill, they can release toxic substances such as mercury and lead<\/strong>, which may contaminate soil and water. At the same time, valuable materials including copper, iron, gold and silver<\/strong> are lost instead of being recovered and reused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So how can you make sure your unwanted or pre-loved electronics don\u2019t go to waste<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Buy refurbished tech<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Buying refurbished electronics<\/strong> can help reduce waste and save money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Refurbished devices are typically repaired, tested and restored before being resold. Platforms such as Reboxed<\/a><\/strong> and eBay<\/strong> offer a wide range of refurbished phones, laptops and other electronics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Take items to a dedicated e-waste recycling facility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If reuse or repair isn\u2019t possible, the best option is to recycle electronics properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specialist recycling facilities are equipped to handle electronic waste safely and recover valuable materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the UK, you can search for a local recycling location through Recycle Now<\/strong>, which lists authorised recycling points across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
